Sylum Charity: New Adventures

New Adventures is an iconic and ground-breaking British dance-theatre company, famous for telling stories with a unique theatrical twist. For over 30 years Matthew Bourne and New Adventures have delighted, inspired and nurtured people of all ages and backgrounds: audiences, artists and the next generation. We create world class productions and engaging projects, reaching thousands worldwide every year.

Sir Matthew Bourne OBE is widely hailed as the UK’s most popular and successful choreographer and director.

For over 30 years he has been creating and directing dance for musicals, theatre, film as well as his own highly successful, award-winning companies.

Matthew is the creator of the world’s longest running ballet production, and has been recognised by numerous international awards. He was knighted in the Queen’s New Year Honours 2016 for services to dance, and awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award – one of the most coveted honours in the world of dance – in recognition of his outstanding services to the art of ballet.

On a personal level – Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake has been a major inspiration.   Just recently had the honor to watch Car Man and was blown away.

The theatre, actors/dancers, and New Adventures productions has been hit hard during the Pandemic, as have many theatres and museums.

I’ve personally donated to their Dance School to help these ‘kids’ be able to keep learning dance.  Also because it’s fun they call their Dance School – Swan School!

Sylum Charity: Music for Relief

The Western United States and Canada typically see wildfires each year, especially between August and  November. In 2020 “Above Normal significant fire potential is expected across much of the Great Basin, northern California, Pacific Northwest, and northern Rockies.” According to the National Interagency Fire Center’s (NIFC) National Interagency Coordination Center (NICC) – the body that coordinates wildfire resources across the U.S in their August 1 update.

And we’re already seeing that prediction come to be. There are several major fires burning across North America and as of the morning of August 19, there were 75 large uncontained fires identified by the NICC with the goal of full suppression and another 18 major wildfires being managed under another strategy such as controlled burn.

In California, as of Aug. 19, there have been at least 5,762 fire incidents so far in 2020. Compared with 5,800 incidents by the end of October in 2019. California Governor Gavin Newsome declared a state of emergency for the entire state of California on August 18th as a result of the significant fires and the critical fire weather conditions.

Immediate needs include shelter, evacuation support, family reconnection, food, health care (especially due to the excessive smoke and poor air quality during the COVID-19 pandemic) and case management. Due to COVID-19, additional resources will be required to evacuate safely into non-communal facilities.

Long-term support will be needed for the rebuilding of homes, income recovery, agricultural needs and additional preparedness support to vulnerable populations and mental health and psychosocial support. The combined threat of COVID-19 and wildfires are causing extraordinary anxiety and trauma in affected populations.

For a complete list of all active wildfire incidents across the United States, please visit the National Interagency Fire Center or the National Wildfire Coordination Group’s InciWeb.

Sylum Charity: Monuments Men Foundation

The Monuments Men Foundation is a not-for-profit organization created to raise worldwide awareness about the service of the Monuments Men and Women, honor them for their achievements, and complete their unfinished mission of returning missing art to the rightful owners.

The Monuments Men were a group of American and British men and women—museum curators, art historians, librarians, architects, even artists—responsible for preserving the artistic and cultural achievements of western civilization from the destruction of war and theft by the Nazis.

The Foundation created 345 individual biographies of the Monuments Men and Women, detailing their lives, military service, and achievements. In time the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Section, known as The Monuments Men, would include volunteers from fourteen nations.

Sylum Charity: Food Banks

Hunger is a major issue around the world.   Food Banks are a blessing for many communities, especially during hard times.

Feeding America is a organization with Food Banks across the US.   These Food Banks always need support whether it’s food, volunteers, or donations.   If you can donate to your local Food Bank – I’ve done both volunteer work and gave goods.  I’m amazed at how many they can feed with just a few dollars and a box of dry goods.

Feeding America

If you know any other good Food Banks in the US or International let me know I’ll add to the Sylum Charity list.

As today is actually National Day of Charity – I though I would ask … would anyone be interested if I kept a link list on the blog of variety of Charities so they can be found later?

Sylum Charity: Beanie for Brain Cancer

This Foundation – The Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) – is a Non-Profit, Health Promotion Charity that my wife Kirralee and I began in 2014, after I was diagnosed with brain cancer. We began the Foundation when we realised how underfunded brain cancer was in Australia in comparison to other cancers. The lack of funding meant very little research into treatments or cures for brain cancer and, as a result, not much has changed in the shocking brain cancer mortality rates over the past 30 years.

We had no idea when we started our Foundation and set about raising funds for some much needed research, the incredible amount of support we would receive from people everywhere.
To date the Foundation has raised over $17 million and funded; a Brain Cancer Biobank, Travel Grants, multiple research projects around Australia including three Fellowships and multiple Brain Cancer Care Coordinators. Amazing! And all thanks to our supporters and our tireless volunteers.

Ultimately research means better outcomes for brain cancer patients but research is expensive – so we will continue to make it our priority to raise funds and ensure those funds get to where they are needed most. Our Foundation is a very small organisation that runs mostly on the generosity of our supporters and some community grants which allows us to keep the running costs to a bare minimum so that one day, maybe in my lifetime, together, we will find a cure for brain cancer.

Join our tribe… we believe anything is possible!
