While I do frequent FB and Twitter a lot, I can also live without them. I find that people rely on them too much and are apt to throw tantrums if you don’t follow their posts to keep up on their lives. “What do you mean you didn’t know? I posted about it on FB!” Some people go overboard with the sharing, too. I don’t need to know what you’re up to every five minutes, or have 30 messages in a day about the same topic.
Also, not every business NEEDS FB and Twitter. A lot of clients want me to create accounts for them and attach it to their brand new websites, but really, what would they post about? It’s not for every business.
The only one I use seriously is LinkedIn. Where I live it’s one of the main ways to network for contacts and job opportunities. (When I lived in the US, it wasn’t so prominent in the social media circles, yet.) I’ve gotten a few clients via LinkedIn and made some great headway with getting my name out there.
I like social media, but not when I am with people and instead of talking to those with them, they spend all their time on their phone. It can be a great help to connect with people but connecting with those around you should be as important.
I’m awful about social media. I mean you can see how often I manage to post a reply here. I’m like maybe 8 times more active on my Facebook. But I want to be more active on social media because I really want to be an e-publishing author when I finish this last year of college(University). I have a twitter account that I started a few years ago that was basically just somewhere I could go and scream into the dark about medical or family issues. But I haven’t been on it in awhile because there is too much to scream about. I have a blogspot that I’ve never used because I thought I might be able to blog and do college and handle life but I’m not that awesome yet. One day I hope to level up enough to use it. I just got a tumblr because I wanted to maybe communicate with some Fanfic authors that way. But, I feel like I need a walkthrough or it doesn’t work right on my blackberry PlayBook. Really, I’m just not that big into social media because I’m a very private person. Well, sort of, I don’t like to share what is going on in my life unless asked. So, since nobody ever asks I don’t really share. But I’m starting to get a handle on things in my life and hope to be able to have time to dedicate to a particular social media. So maybe my social media habits will change. When I was in highschool and my first few years at college, I was intensely active in the guild I belonged to on neopets. So, it seems like it is time for a change.
I love social media actually, mainly because it’s a much easier way to keep into contact or updated with people I normally wouldn’t be able to. See, I have a large family. When I mean large, I mean I have two parents, three siblings, soon-to-be three nieces and nephews, sixteen aunts and uncles (plus all of their husbands/wives/partners), around fifty to seventy first cousins (I lost count years ago), as well as first cousins once removed and second cousins and great aunts and uncles, etc. Facebook allows me to keep tabs on them and what they’re doing. I could never keep up with them without it.
I have two facebook accounts. One is for family and friends, and the other is for fandom/acquaintances through fandom that aren’t personal friends. I have a couple of pinterest accounts I use for different things. This summer I’ll be working on setting up my business and will have a facebook page for that.
Those on here know I have a twitter account that I use. I also have journals on LJ and DW.
I also have a tumblr account and this has been getting most of my use lately. I do enjoy it, as you get more room than on twitter to talk about something, and it’s set up well for image sharing, and the reblogging feature is awesome, because there’s a ton of stuff on there I would never see otherwise.
Fandom is really young over there (a lot of 13 to 25ers that don’t realize fandom existed outside of tumblr yet), so you get the volatile, highly emotional crap that many of us left behind years ago, but it’s easy enough to ignore it (or to grab snacks and watch with glee when you’re bored and want to go ‘omg, remember when our generation were all that stupid?!’) It can be a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it and how to find stuff, it’s not a problem. I don’t think it’s for everyone, especially not anyone with a short fuse when it comes to patience or the inability to let things just roll off your back. Me, personally, my fucks went on vacation to the land of “I Don’t Give A” back in the early nineties and set up permanent residence, so it’s not an issue for me.
The only “social media” account I have is my Livejournal account, and I only got that to read fanfiction. I have no Facebook, no Twitter, no Tumblr, no nothing.
I’m basically shy so I only have a few close friends who I keep in touch with, and my family is small and close enough that I see everyone at least 3 – 4 times a year so I have no real need for any other social media.
You’re here and I think this is some sort of social media platform. And hey look, you made a response so at least you can handle your shyness. It takes me 15 weeks to be able to talk to anyone in my college classes and then classes are over. So I don’t make any friends ever. But, a small group of friends is great because ya’ll end up always knowing what’s going on with each one. And you can get great support and cuddles from them.
But it seems like you just use social media for fanfiction which is totally understandable. Some Fandoms you need social media for and my forays into various ones have been fun. So far this fandom AU is the must supportive fandom on social media.
I tried Facebook once and decided it wasn’t for me. I think the social media sites are good for some people. The social media sites I could live without since I don’t use them. Besides I use email to keep in touch with my family and friends.
I love social media, but I mainly use it to pass on fanfiction, political, and fandom related things. I use FB to keep in touch with my family and a few friends, but since I work 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week my family uses it to contact me about big things. Especially since I constantly forget to charge my phone.

Not that I have an opinion or anything.
