I grew up reading both DC and Marvel during the Golden Age. I had a small collection that I read and re-read, but my grandmother threw it out when we moved from the South End to the East End of Louusville right before I started junior high. (Mom and I were both furious over that.)
In DC I loved Batman, Superman, Superboy, Justice League and Hawkman.
In Marvel I loved Fantastic Four, X Men, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, The Avengers — and Prince Namor.
Mother would read my comics to me every night before I went to bed, it was our special time together because she worked.
In fact, I used to help our pharmacist put the comics in the glass counter for display. He was very elderly and it meant he didn’t have to get on the floor to do it. He would let me pick out three comics I wanted as “payment” for the help and I would buy the others out of my allowance. Mom objected to it at first until he told her I was being a real help to him. There were no more objections after that. In fact she teased me over having my first job twice a month. That ended, of course when we moved away.
I dearly adored Stan and Jack and would write them every month about the comics I read. I had a letter published in Fantastic Four one time and was ecstatic about it! I even had the first issue of FF — until grandmother threw it out. Of course it was read to death.
I don’t read many today, they just aren’t the same…
      Sorry, rambling as usual.

  1. When I was young I read my dad’s Sgt. Rock comics, then I started reading stuff like X-Men, and Legion of Superheroes. When I got older I started reading offbeat comics like Lenore the Cute Little Dead Girl, and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. Now I mostly read shonen manga like Bleach and One Piece.
