Reminder: New Sylum Security Group

Reminder

This is weekly reminder, that because Yahoo sucks, Sylum Security is moving again!

We’re moving to Groups.io

Many users pointed out this group, and from the research we did, it will work nicely for what we need.   It’s actually has many of the features that the original Yahoo Group had: set welcome emails, scheduled monthly emails, and control on posts/messages.  It’s listed as a private group, and only can be accessed via the link provided, you will not find it in the directory.   Only messages can be sent by me (the owner), so if you have questions – please send an email to sylumclan@gmail.com (I’m slowly moving away from yahoo completely).

In time if there’s call for it, the group can be opened to a discussion type group, but right now it’s only for distribution of the password.

Sylum SecuritySylumSecurity groups.io Group

At this moment we’re not changing passwords, this doesn’t mean you can not join the new group.   We’re putting into place stronger security measures, which means we’ll be changing the password at least once a year.  So to keep up you will need to transfer.

Sylum Updates: Reminders & Odds/Ends

Lots of posts from me today!!

Just a few odds/ends to give an update and discuss.

Sylum Security:  Yahoo is closing on the 15th of December, which isn’t that far away.  We’re moving to Groups.io for the distribution of the password.  If you haven’t joined the new group please do.

New Group: Sylum Security

Sylum Wiki:  As stated on the Sylum Inspiration – the updates screwed up all the tabs on the wiki.  It works on the Pages but not the posts!  The developer of the plugin we used has disappeared so we’re working out a new system.  If you clicked the link for Aristotle you’ll see the new bio format.  At the moment we’re slowly updating the bios.  We’re focusing on bios with the updated images so far we’ve updated bios in Border and Camelot.  Any Bio used for Sylum Inspiration will be updated before posting, and when we get new images we’ll update the bio.

Sylum Vault: Yes, you just got a post about it, but in typical fashion, just as the post went out we were notified that Etsy was able to get everything put into place to show that the website is updated and secured, so all is good.   So stop on by and check out the new digs.

Reminder: Sylum Password – New Group

Reminder

Sylum Security Yahoo Group:  As of December 15th Yahoo Group will no longer exist, so we’ve built a new Sylum Security Group at Goups.io.

The password at the moment isn’t changing, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t join the group.  As we’re going to be changing the password on a yearly bases for security reasons, so you still need to sign up.

Sylum Update: Blogs & Things

Well I’m back!  Ish.

I’ve been working on a few behind the scenes updates.  There was a lot more behind the scenes updates that needed to be done, than I realized.

Wiki Blog:  After WordPress did their last update a few things broke!  The main problem was the tab function which is on every post, didn’t work anymore.  I waited a bit to see if the theme would get updated and it just hasn’t been, so we’ve uploaded a new theme.  The Wiki has a whole new look check it out!

Sylum Blog:  After WordPress did their last update a few things broke! (Hmmm I think there’s a running theme here) Well on the bright side most of the issues were fixed, mainly the read more cut.  The one thing that hasn’t been fixed is the inability to read comments that have been made.  You can make a comment, reply to a comment, but can’t see said comments.  At the moment I’m looking into updating the theme for the blog – it could use a fresh look.

Sylum Security Yahoo Group:  Oh what can I say about this … many many things.  We’ll start with Yahoo Sucks!  As of December 15th Yahoo Group will no longer exists – why they couldn’t just do this last year I do not know.  So yes, we had to find a new group.  Which hey we did!  Go us.

We made a new Sylum Security Group at Groups.io (fingers crossed this will stick along longer than a year).  The password at the moment isn’t changing, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t join the group.  As we’re going to be changing the password on a yearly bases for security reasons, so you still need to sign up.

New Group: https://groups.io/g/SylumSecurity

A few things about the new group:  It’s easier to use!  There are a few ways to sign in, you don’t have to have a yahoo or google account to do it.  It sends out automatic welcome and monthly reminders (I may have teared up a bit with this one).  And well if at some point we decided to have a ‘discussion board/email’ type thing again – it’s set up for it.

Sylum Archive: For once with all the updates, continued to work in pristine condition *eyes it – this doesn’t mean you can screw up now!* So that one is staying the same 🙂

Update: So the Move

So the move isn’t going as planned.

Due to a mishap of delivery of furniture – it got pushed back until end of September instead of when it should’ve been end of August.  So at this moment we’re just now settling in, the shop will be open later than expected.

Sylum Update: Variety of Randomness

More Updates

We’re not even going to discuss the move – lets just say it’s not going as well as expected.

Now to the updates:

  • The Read More is still not working in emails.  It’s a hassle at the moment, and hoping at some point an update will fix it.  If there is anything that sensitive – I’ll make sure to leave space so it’s not seen right off the top in an email.
  • The updates also broke the tabs and skin on the Sylum Wiki.  At this moment none of the tabs are showing for any page or bio.  You can still read the bio, and click on links but it’s one long piece of information instead of nice and neat like I had it – *grumbles at WordPress*.
  • Covid.  Sooner or later I was going to have to answer this unasked question.  Is Sylum going to deal with Covid?  No, we’re not having Covid in Sylum.  There are few events that you don’t want in the fiction you write/read to escape reality … this is one of them.  Plus it screws with my timeline – it already f*ked enough with my professional and personal life – I’m refusing to adjust my timeline.

Blog Glitches

Pops up quickly.  WordPress updated – which always breaks something.   Lately I’ve noticed that the ‘read more’ line is disappearing in the emails that are sent out.   This isn’t too much of an issue if it’s a Sylum Snippet or Afternoon Fic – you just get the story in your inbox (please do make sure to stop by the blog to leave comments).

But for something like Sylum Trivia or Top Ten List – you’ll need to stop by the blog to view the post to click on the contact form to fill out the answers.

In time an update will pop up for themes, plug ins etc and it will be fixed.  But until then … we’ll just have to work around it *sigh*.

Blog Updates

There’s been some updates to the blog.

Two categories have been added to drop down menu Sylum Stories: Snippets & Teasers – these are all the snippets and teasers that have been posted on the blog.

Reminder – you can find the link to the old Old Archive in the drop down menu: Sylum Information/Sylum Archive.

Spring Fling & Seven Days of Summer 2020 have been added to drop down menu: Sylum Events.

If you ever have a question of where something is located or just a question in general – you can click on Sylum Q&A on the main slider header or under the drop down menu: Sylum Information.

Sylum Stories & Where They Are Located

I’ve been asked questions, and seen searches on the Archive and Wiki pertaining to a few Sylum stories.  I figured best to put a heads up where somethings are located.

All stories that have been edited to fit Sylum Canon is located in the Sylum Archive.

There are still stories on the Old Archive.  For example: Family and Evolution.   Plus some that haven’t been transferred and those that are considered non-canon.

Race Through Dark Places – has been removed and being edited at the moment.

If anyone has questions about certain stories you can always email me at sylumclan@yahoo.com or leave a message on this thread: Q&A Center

All these links can be found in the menu on the front page.

March 1st: Change Over

Sylum Update!

At this moment the Clan Security Yahoo Group has been deleted along with the old password.  If you’re freaking out right now, because your password doesn’t work and don’t have the new one – go Here.

Last Day: New Sylum Security Group

Sylum Security Reminder

Last Day!

As a reminder we’re moving the Security List to a new list.  If you missed the State of the Clan, we’re doing this because Yahoo is an asshole.

In the original security group we had it arranged that an email would go out once a month as a reminder of the password.  Considering they deleted all the files, we figured this would change.  Shockingly, Yahoo fucked that up.  On the 1st of January & February, Yahoo sent out that email.  Problem:  I can’t change, delete, or do anything with it!  There is no file to change, no section in the control panel to change what goes out, and they is no support from yahoo.  Great job there Yahoo.  Which leads to a major problem, when we change the password, once a month an email would go out with the wrong information.

Because of this we came with a new system, that is based on the old.  Sadly, Yahoo is one of the only systems that has a ‘mailing service’ that is basic and free.  Mailing Lists, are clumsy and can be expensive.  While other groups have restrictions on adult content.  And we’re not going password free, due to the nature of our content.

So we’ve built a new Security Group, through Yahoo.  It works just like the old one, you sign up and you get the password.  If you are on the old group you WILL have to join this one to get the new password.  And yes it is a NEW password.

The old group and password will be deleted March 1st – TOMORROW.  So this is your last chance to move over.

All links on the blog, plus the one on the new Front Page of the website have been updated to reflect this change.

Sylum Security: Update

Security Update

As mentioned earlier that the Yahoo Groups are going away … ish.  They are basically turning into a listserve.  There will be no online group, where you can upload files or access older emails.  Well for the Sylum Security this isn’t an issue, not really.

So we decided to basically keep things the way they are.  I’ll send out emails at the first of the month with the password, as a reminder.  When we do decided to update the password (Warning!  This will likely be next year!) we’ll send out plenty of notices via the group.

You will still need this password to access the Sylum Wiki along with fanmixs/videos.  When you request access, we’ll be using this as your statement that you’re over 18 and fully understand what you’re getting into.

If you already are part of the Yahoo Group!  Great no need to do anything.  If you’re not – go here and request access for the password.

Thanks for the patience as we tried to figure all this out.

Note:  Those of you that have access to the old Sylum Yahoo Group (ahh the memories).  Though the group was closed, I left it active for archival purposes.  As they are removing all the content, it’s kinda pointless.  So by end of year that group will be deleted.  So the only group you should be apart of is this one Clan Security and that’s only for the purpose of distributing the password.
